Forensic engineering is a field where engineering meets detective work, and where every structural, material or systems failure tells a story. Muhammet Ozer, the Forensic Engineering Lead at MBC Group has nearly a decade of experience in the construction and consulting industry, and now leads our dynamic team of multidisciplinary engineers to ensure that every project is approached with a comprehensive and meticulous eye.
Muhammet’s career began with a prominent construction and restoration firm, where he gained a comprehensive understanding of construction practices and project management. This foundational experience paved the way for his transition into forensic engineering, a field that requires not only technical knowledge but also an investigative mindset. His true passion lies in understanding the ‘why’ behind structural failures. “Forensic engineering allows me to delve into the root causes of structural failures and other issues, providing solutions that prevent future occurrences,” he explains.
His role at MBC Group involves leading a team of experts in mechanical, electrical, structural, and geotechnical engineering, ensuring that projects are approached from a holistic perspective. One of the most fascinating aspects of engineering, according to Muhammet, is the diversity of projects. From post-fire assessments to water loss investigations, each project presents unique challenges and learning opportunities. “Engaging in diverse projects across structural, mechanical, and electrical engineering is truly enriching. It’s fascinating to see how these fields interrelate and contribute to multidisciplinary projects, broadening my expertise and perspective,” he says. This multidisciplinary approach not only enhances the quality of the investigations but also broadens the team’s collective expertise.
One of Muhammet’s favourite projects was a structural investigation of a 10-story concrete condominium building following a water loss incident in 2022. This project involved leading structural and geotechnical investigations to assess damages caused by a water main valve failure. The complexity of the project required a meticulous approach to ensure the building’s restoration. He’s also been involved in other significant projects, such as large fire and post-fire structural condition assessments. He’s played a pivotal role in determining the extent of structural damages and outlining temporary shoring requirements, reviewing buildings’ structural integrity and producing detailed structural drawings. Muhammet’s ability to navigate such intricate challenges showcases his problem-solving skills, which he considers an engineering “superpower” at work. His dedication to safety and standards is evident in every project he undertakes, ensuring that all assessments and repairs comply with the highest industry standards.
Collaboration is key to the success of all of MBC’s engineering projects. Muhammet and his team work closely with insurance adjusters, contractors, real estate developers, property managers, legal professionals, transportation safety experts, energy sector professionals, environmental scientists and healthcare facility managers. These partnerships ensure comprehensive investigations and effective solutions, leveraging the expertise of various professionals to address complex challenges.
Looking ahead, Muhammet aims to grow the team across all engineering disciplines, demonstrating their capabilities and expertise while building strong relationships with key clients and partners. “Our goal is to be recognized as leaders in engineering, to be known for our thorough investigations and innovative solutions,” he states.
“The future belongs to those who prepare for it today,” he quotes Malcolm X, a mantra that resonates with his approach to both his career and the projects he leads. By preparing meticulously and staying ahead of industry trends, Muhammet ensures that his team is always ready to tackle the next challenge.
