Leaders in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) are often predominantly occupied by men, however, there are women who rise, breaking barriers and setting new standards. One such woman is Nicole Farry, whose journey in STEM is nothing short of inspiring. From her early days of learning at Capilano University to her current role as the Director of Environmental Services at MBC Group, Nicole’s story is a testament to her determination, passion, and unwavering commitment to making a difference.
From a young age, Nicole found herself naturally drawn to the fields of mathematics and science. Recognizing her strengths in these areas, she was inspired to channel her talents into the pursuit of an Engineering Diploma at Capilano University. She knew that an engineering degree could lead to many professional opportunities. Her program was a field dominated by men, but Nicole was not deterred. She was driven by a passion for problem-solving and a desire to innovate. She recalls, “Choosing to study engineering was a conscious decision to step into a male-dominated field. I was aware of the challenges, but I was driven by my passion for problem-solving and innovation. I wanted to be part of the solution, to contribute to the advancements in our society.”
After earning her diploma, Nicole transferred to the prestigious University of British Columbia (UBC), where she furthered her education in Chemical Engineering. She spent countless hours in labs and libraries, where she perfected her skills and prepared herself for the professional world ahead.
Upon graduation, Nicole entered the insurance industry. It was here that she discovered the environmental consulting side of insurance claims. This experience combined with her educational background, opened her eyes to the critical role of environmental services within the industry.
Nicole shares, “Transitioning into the insurance industry was a turning point in my career. It was here that I realized the significant impact of environmental consulting on insurance claims and the broader industry. I witnessed firsthand how our actions and decisions could significantly impact occupational safety and public health; I was compelled to be a part of that.”
About three and a half years ago, Nicole joined MBC Group as an Environmental Consultant. Her role involved providing expert advice on environmental issues, a responsibility she took on with enthusiasm and dedication. Nicole’s expertise and leadership skills did not go unnoticed, leading to her current position as the Director of Environmental Services.
In her role, Nicole has been a key player in advancing initiatives related to occupational health and public safety within the company, including spearheading our recent collaboration with WorkSafe BC’s mandatory Asbestos Awareness training. She shares, “As the Director of Environmental Services, I am in a unique position to effect change and contribute to enhancing occupational health and public safety; each day serves as a reminder of the significance of our work, and I am committed to making a meaningful impact.”
Nicole’s journey is a powerful reminder of the possibilities that lie in the realm of STEM for young women. She concludes, “My journey in STEM has been challenging, rewarding, and transformative. I hope my story can inspire more young women to pursue their passions, break barriers, and make their mark in STEM. The path may not be easy, but it is definitely worth it.”
